Greg Chappell has weighed in on India’s narrow defeat at Lord’s, placing responsibility not just on Ravindra Jadeja’s cautious batting but also on Shubman Gill’s leadership. According to Chappell, while Jadeja admirably shielded the tail, he failed to press for victory—“a single every over…was never going to be enough”.
Chappell argues Gill should have clearly signaled Jadeja to take charge, saying: “You are the man who has to get this done. The tail’s job is to hang in there with you, but you must go for the win”. He pointed to Ben Stokes’ iconic Leeds innings in 2019 as an example of backing a key player to go all out—even at the risk of failure—and emphasized that leadership means fostering that trust.
Chappell also highlighted communication as an area where Gill must grow. He asserted that strong captains define expectations clearly and uphold high standards through consistent communication—in the dressing room, on the field, and during training.
In essence, Chappell believes that to guide India to success, Gill needs to sharpen both his tactical instructions and his ability to inspire confidence and clarity in his team.
